More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies, making it the 6th most common chronic illness in the United States. While most allergy elimination techniques include medication—antihistamines, nasal sprays, eye drops, corticosteroids, inhalers, skin creams and even immunotherapy—there are more natural ways to alleviate allergies if desired.
In this article, we will break down the various natural allergy relief methods so you can breathe easier and feel better!
What are the Different Types of Allergies?
According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), “Your immune system controls how your body defends itself. For instance, if you have an allergy to pollen, the immune system identifies pollen as an invader or allergen. Your immune system overreacts by producing antibodies called Immunoglobulin E (IgE). These antibodies travel to cells that release chemicals, causing an allergic reaction.”
That main chemical is called histamine, and is released by mast cells to the area where the body has contacted the allergen. While histamine’s purpose is to help manage the body’s reaction to the allergen, it ends up producing what we know as allergy symptoms (which we’ll get into shortly).
Allergies can be categorized into broad classifications, which include:
- Seasonal allergies (AKA rhinitis or hay fever)—dependant on pollen levels and typically worse in spring and fall.
- Perennial allergies—occur year-round
- Food allergies—the most common are peanuts, seafood, tree nuts, eggs, cow’s milk, soy and wheat
- Drug/medication allergies
- Animal allergies
- Indoor allergies—such as dust or mold
While histamine is released to help the body fight off allergens, your body will experience a variety of symptoms, including:
- Runny nose
- Itchy skin
- Skin irritation, such as hives
- Swelling (typically of the tongue, lip, throat or face)
- Wheezing (asthma can be triggered by allergies)
- Dizziness and lightheadedness
- Abdominal cramps
- Anaphylaxis (the most severe reaction, which is life-threatening)
If you suffer from mild to moderate allergies and are looking for a more natural way to treat your symptoms, we at Blue Creek practice allergy elimination and can help you feel better again!
Allergy Elimination the Natural Way Through Acupuncture
In 1983, Dr. Devi S. Nabrudipad founded NAET, an all-natural way of alleviating allergy symptoms. These techniques blend Eastern and Western medicine together to help reduce—and sometimes even eliminate—allergy symptoms.
At Blue Creek, we utilize a variety of techniques, including certified NAET and other allergy elimination methods. Our allergy elimination treatment has offered relief to many allergy sufferers and continues to show success:
“After years of allergy treatment and meds, nothing worked. NAET has dramatically reduced my allergies by 70% after a few sessions.” (Sarah H.)
“I can breathe! No more runny nose, itchy eyes, lethargy, or antihistamines.” (Robin F.)
“[I have] a happier daughter (2 years old) without a milk allergy!” (Carolyn M.)
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a school of thought that believes the body has a flow of electrical currents (known as meridians), and that allergic reactions cause blockages to these currents, causing an imbalance of qi and general disruption of balance within the body. This leads to an overall imbalance.
Allergy elimination works by clearing those blockages (either through acupuncture or acupressure) and re-educating the body to not have the existing reaction/sensitivity (immune response) to the allergen(s). While this method does not claim to cure allergies, it does have an 80-90% success rate of eliminating its symptoms.
In 2013, a group of German researchers tested the efficacy of allergy elimination with a group of 422 people, all of whom had pollen allergies. The participants were divided into three groups:
- Acupuncture treatments and antihistamines (taken when needed)
- Fake acupuncture (meaning the needles were placed randomly) and antihistamines (taken when needed)
- Only antihistamines (taken when needed)
After only two months, the study revealed that 71% of the genuine acupuncture participants noted an improvement in their allergy symptoms and less use of antihistamines.
Allergy Elimination FAQs
Who could benefit from allergy elimination treatments?
One of the best parts about this method is that it is safe for all ages—including children and the elderly. If you or a loved one is suffering from the aforementioned mild to moderate allergy symptoms, acupuncture for allergy elimination could be right for you! If you suffer from more serious allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis, talk to your allergist about treatment options first.
How many treatments are required?
While some patients see positive results after only one treatment, it usually takes between one to five sessions to notice lasting improvements. These treatments are usually completed within three to six months.
It is important to note that these sessions are highly customized to your unique needs. If you suffer from a lot of allergies, you will need to have more appointments to treat each allergen. Your acupuncturist should only treat one allergen (or a group of closely-related allergens) in a session for maximum efficiency.
Are the effects permanent?
Perhaps the best part is that the results from allergy elimination treatments often last patients for the rest of their lives! It is, however, recommended that some patients who experience seasonal allergies receive a booster treatment at the beginning of the season.
Are there any side effects?
Luckily, acupuncture is a very low-risk treatment. You may experience some changes in sleep patterns, appetite, emotions and digestion; however, these will subside without additional complications.
In addition to acupuncture, are there are other natural methods to help alleviate symptoms of allergies?
Yes, there are many natural ways to help alleviate symptoms of allergies including:
- Anti-inflammatory diet
- Elimination diet
- Sinus rise
- Essential oils
- And more
