Finding Balance With These Self-Care Practices

We’re all trying to create balance in our lives. Between work time, free time, family time, alone time, etc. it’s hard to find a moment to just breathe. Juggling life can be tricky, and finding balance is a lifelong quest, but it’s not impossible. Here are 5 easy self-care practices to help find that balance:

1) Hydrate

Water is the elixir of life. We are made of 80% water, which is why it plays such a vital role in just about everything we do. Proper blood circulation, digestion, metabolization and brain function all depend on us staying hydrated! Do yourself a favor and grab a cool water bottle that you can carry around with you throughout your day. Keep it on your desk at work, bring it with you to run errands, take it to your kid’s soccer practice—whatever you need to do to make sure you stay hydrated.

2) Sleep

Adults should aim for 7.5-9 hours of sleep per night, but it’s not simply how long you sleep that matters. While it’s important that we do get ‘enough’ sleep, the quality is what is really important. Prepare your mind and your body in the 2 hours leading up to your bed time by minimizing screen time, stretching out your muscles and doing some deep breathing and progressive relaxation so that when you do actually fall asleep, it’s deep and restorative.

3) Take Time for Yourself

Life has tons of priorities, and only 24 hours in a day to get them done. When finding balance, make sure you add taking time for yourself to that list! Taking care of yourself is not selfish—quite the contrary—it enables you to have the energy to continue to do all that you do on a regular basis! While everyone has their own best self-care practices, here are a few of our favorites: go for a walk, stretch, take a hot bath, read a good book, laugh, call an old friend, tick one thing off your to-do list, watch your guilty pleasure tv show, get flowers, give flowers and of course, get a massage, facial or acupuncture treatment and you’ll be feeling top-notch in no time!

4) What Matters?

Give some thought to what truly matters to you in your life. Find what gives you meaning and purpose and make sure you do some of that each day. Discover what lights a fire within you and tend to that fire on a regular basis—it won’t burn without your help. Make sure to find meaning in the little things, even the mundane.

5) Who Matters?

YOU matter. Surround yourself with people who know this to be true, who celebrate you and cherish being celebrated by you. Spend quality time with people who support your ideas and dreams, no matter how crazy they may be, and who love you unconditionally. And make sure to reciprocate that! The exchange of both receiving and giving that kind of love and support is what poets have written about since the beginning of time.
