Waxing is a great option for keeping your skin smooth and hairless for weeks! In order to get the most effective (and safe) wax, be sure to prep skin before waxing.
But how exactly do you prep skin before waxing?
1. Keep hair long enough for the wax to grip it
When the hair is too short, the wax can’t pick it up. When it’s too long, on the other hand, it prevents wax from sticking, causing more pain. Two to three weeks of growth, or about an eighth to a quarter of an inch, is sufficient before waxing.
2. Gently exfoliate your skin a day or two before waxing
Exfoliation helps wax grab hair and not your skin, which means a better wax and less pain. Make sure to avoid harsh scrubs the day of your waxing appointment, as to not irritate the skin. A rough washcloth is perfect for a gentle exfoliation.
3. Clean before waxing
Waxing can leave skin vulnerable to infection, and areas of the body that are normally warm and damp are more prone to bacterial growth. Making sure your skin is clean is an easy way to protect yourself against painful infections!
4. Inspect your skin
Look for broken skin or inflammation that needs to heal before you’re ready to wax. Waxing over affected skin could cause infection and further damage. Additionally, if you have moles or beauty marks, point them out so we can be protect the area during the waxing process.
5. Stop potentially harmful medications
Certain medications can sensitize skin to waxing and leave you susceptible to injury. If you use retinol-based products, stop using these for two weeks before waxing. Accutane users should stop taking their medication for a month before waxing to avoid injury. Before making any changes to your prescription medications, make sure to talk to your dermatologist to see if stopping your medications is right for you.
6. Avoid moisturizing on the day of your waxing session
Healthy, well-moisturized skin allows the wax to release more easily, but too much moisturizer could coat the hair, interfering with the wax’s grip. For moisturized-but-not-too-moisturized skin, apply lotion up until the day of your appointment.
How often should you wax?
When you begin a waxing routine, it is recommended to return every 3 weeks for 3-4 weeks. (This catches the different hair growth cycles.) The more you get waxed, you will begin to notice hair growing back finer and more slowly. At that time, appointments can usually be spaced every 4-6 weeks apart.
More about our wax:
At Blue Creek, we use Body Wax Brazil, a premium-quality wax that is 100% eco-friendly, and created with all-natural ingredients (locally sourced, when available). Besides the high performance quality of the wax, we chose Body Wax Brazil because it’s handmade in Colorado. We were shocked to learn that most body waxes are made in Europe and shipped to the US. We are excited to not only support a local company, but to also and reduce the environmental impact of shipping.
